Ancient Bronze Age rock carvings at Tanum Sweden
Here we see a few of the thousands of rock carvings at Tanum. These rock carvings, petroglyps, (petro = stone / glyph = carving) date back to the Bronze Age and are found in great numbers throughout Scandinavia. Although the exact use of the carvings is still debated, some of the the themes of the carvings are similar to other examples of the same period elsewhere in the world. Warfare, farming and worship are the three main themes depicted, with a heavy emphasis on maritime culture.
The carvings are of great importance to our knowledge of Bronze Age culture and religion in Northwestern Europe. Although generally speaking, archaeology of the period is not at all rare and the conservation of objects is sometimes even exceptionally good, the petroglyphs give extra context to knowledge gaps that archaeology sometimes simply cannot answer.
